Lt Col (Ret) Daun Ann Horttor (USAF)

Daun Ann Horttor died at San Antonio, Texas, October 15, 2014. She was born May 13, 1961, in the Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York a few hours before her Dad was to take his last and hardest final exam. The first time he saw Daun she was being given a bath in a laundry tub in the hospital laundry room because the nursery was full.

She was consecrated as a baby and later became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Topeka. She graduated from Topeka West High School where she was the pianist for the TWHS Jazz group and from the University of Kansas where she was the pianist for the KU Jazz band. At KU she followed in the footsteps of her mother as a proud member of the Alpha Phi sorority and was the first female at KU to achieve the rank of Cadet Coronel in the Air Force ROTC.

At her commissioning ceremony as a 2cd. Lt in the USAF she was given her oath of office by her grandfather, Col Harold Ausherman, a veteran of both WWI and WWII. She retired from active duty in the USAF on August 31, 2005 but remained in the reserves for several more years.

Daun was survived by her son, Tyler, her parents, Don and Jane Ann, her brother, Bretton, her sister in law, Carolyn, her nephew, Charles, and her niece, Mary Ann (all Horttor's).

Military Graveside services by Whiteman Air Force Base will be held Saturday, Nov.22, 2014 at 10:30am at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, Ks followed by Visitation and lunch, to which all friends are invited, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, at Arab Shrine Temple, 1305 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, KS.

Consistent with Daun's request, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children's Hospitals Travel Fund c/o Arab Shrine, 1305 S. Kansas Avenue, Topeka, KS.

The following is from the program at Lieutenant Colonel Horttor’s retirement ceremony from the U.S. Air Force on 31August 2005:

Lieutenant Colonel Daun A. Horttor graduated from Kansas University in 1984, with a Bachelor of General Studies degree in Human Resource Management and Psychology and was commissioned in May 1984 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Additionally, she earned a Master of Aviation Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She has also completed Squadron Officers School, and Air Command and Staff College.

Lieutenant Colonel Horttor graduated from the Basic Air Weapons Controller Course in 1984 and the Automated Air Weapons Controller Course in 1985. She was then assigned as a Fighter Allocator to the 615th Air Control and Warning Squadron at Boerfink Gennany.

In October 1986, she was assigned to the 607th Tactical Control Squadron as an Instructor and Director of Inspections. During this assignment she attended the USAF Fighter Weapons School, graduated in December 1989 and returned to the 607th Tactical Control Squadron as the Weapons and Tactics Officer. From October 1990 to September 1992, she was assigned to the 5th Tactical Control Group at OsanAir Base in the Republic of Korea as Chief, Tactics and Training and held a Mission Ready Weapons Director qualification in the Hardened Tactical Air Control Center.

In September 1992, Lieutenant Colonel Horttor was assigned to the 12th Air Operations Group at Davis Monthan AFB Arizona as Chief, Weapons, Tactics and Training Officer and held a Weapons Director qualification in the Modular Control System. While still stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB, she was reassigned to Det 3, Air Combat Command's Training Support Squadron where she stood-up the Airborne Battlefield Command and Control Center (ABCCC) Operational Training Development Team as the Team Chief. Additionally, she was qualified as a Battlestaff Operations Officer aboard the ABCCC.

Lieutenant Colonel Horttor was assigned to the 325th Training Squadron (TRS), in January 1996, where she served as the Operations Officer. She held a Mission Support Weapons Director qualification on the Modular Control Equipment and NORAD Joint Surveillance System and was an instructor and evaluator for both systems. While assigned to the 325 TRS, she was selected to command Detachment 7, ACC Training Support Squadron (Det 7, ACC TRSS).

Lieutenant Colonel Horttor assumed command of Det 7, ACC TRSS in February 2001 and was responsible for the development and evaluation of courseware used in Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar Systems (JSTARS) aircrew training. After her command tour she was assigned to her current location, the Joint Information Operations Center (HOC) in San Antonio, TX.

When Lieutenant Colonel Horttor first arrived at the HOC, she was Chief, Strategic Forces P1alming Team. Her team provided vulnerability analysis and deliberate plmming in support of functional combatant commanders during crises, contingencies, emergencies and exercises. She then moved to her current position of Chief, 10 Development Division. Lieutenant Colonel Horttor's Division conducts internal and external training; manages DoD's only 10 lessons learned data base; develops Joint 10 doctrine and tactics, teclmiques and procedures; and produces an 10 professional journal. Additionally, Lieutenant Colonel Horttor is the Deputy Air Force Element Commander.

Lieutenant Colonel Horttor is a Master Weapons Director with decorations that include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three), Air Force Conmlendation Medal (two), Air Force Achievement Medal (two), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Lieutenant Colonel Horttor has one son, Tyler, who is 11 years old.
