Kevin Layne Ferrell

Kevin Layne Ferrell (64) died September 16, 2014, in Corpus Christi, Texas, of metastatic lung cancer. He was born May 24, 1950, to Paul E. & Janice C. Ferrell. His maternal grandparents were Ernest & Ima Pogue of Minneapolis, KS; his paternal grandparents were Eugene & Audrey Ferrell of Valley Falls, KS. His grandparents, parents and an infant son, Layne Ferrell, preceded him in death.

He is survived by three children: Justin and wife Traci Ferrell of Concordia, Derek and wife Stephanie Ferrell of Florida, Heather Ferrell and fiancé Joe Drew of Florida; two granddaughters, Piper and Maizy Ferrell; and a sister, Tanzey and her husband Allen Cutter of Tecumseh. Also surviving are three aunts, Dorothy Alexander, Beverley Woodruff and Kay Gibson, and numerous cousins.

Kevin's first marriage was to Verda Williams. They had a son, who died in infancy. His second marriage was to Beverly Page. They had two sons and a daughter, who survive him. He then married Judy Springer. They later divorced. At the time of his death, his companion for 6 years had been Verda Houghlan, his first ex-wife.

Kevin attended Valley Falls Grade School, Indian Creek Grade School and Northern Hills Junior High, graduating from Shawnee Heights High School in 1968. He attended Emporia State University, where he joined Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and graduated from Washburn University. He held numerous jobs in the insurance and finance field before becoming involved in the oil and gas industry. Over the years, he resided in many places including Topeka, Iola and Shawnee Mission, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; Denver, Colorado; Oviedo, Longwood, Casselberry and Altamonte Springs, Florida; and Dallas, Coleman and Corpus Christi, Texas.

Kevin's wish was to be cremated and buried beside his parents. A graveside memorial will be Saturday, November 8, 10:30 am, in Valley Falls Cemetery.
