Vera Fay Gilbert

Vera Fay Gilbert, 92, Topeka, died Monday, June 27, 2016, at Plaza West. She was born October 7, 1923, in Topeka, the daughter of John and Hazel (Snapp) Estes.

Vera attended Holliday Junior High School and Topeka High School. She was owner-operator of Gilbert Market (1956-1987) and Gilbert’s Trophies and Awards. She had also sold Real Estate.

John Lewis Gilbert, Sr. and Vera were married in Topeka on March 8, 1941. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1968. She was also preceded in death by a son, John Lewis Gilbert, Jr., on June 5, 1993.

Surviving are four children: Shirley K. Bennett, James D. Gilbert (Marsha), Jerry W. Gilbert, and Shara Lee Gilbert all of Topeka; a daughter-in-law: Viola Gilbert of Topeka; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Committal services will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 1, 2016, at Prairie Home Cemetery, NW 35th and Menoken Road, Topeka.

Vera will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
