Mable Irene Rook Van Dam, 84, Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2016.

She was born June 16, 1932, in Colony, Kansas, the daughter of Claude and Ada (Hensley) Rook. She grew up in Iola, Kansas, and finished her schooling there and Allen County Junior College.

She married Donald Van Dam on September 29, 1951, in Pittsburg, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 20, 2016. They lived in Barstow, California, while Donald was in the Marine Corps. They then moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked for AT&T and then transferred to Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Topeka in 1967. She retired July 22, 1987, after 33 years. Later she worked three years for KPERS and 25 years giving tours at Old Prairie Town at Historic Ward-Meade Park. Mable did a lot of volunteering and was active at her church with the women’s ministry and teaching Sunday school. She was also involved with Golden Spokes Antique Car Club and Southwestern Bell Pioneers.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia Kay (Will) Hasty; son, Michael (Kathy) Van Dam, both of Topeka; grandsons, Dustin Van Dam and Michael Robb; step-grandson, Jason May; step-granddaughter, Julie Austin; and step-great-granddaughter, Meadow May.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lillian; brother, Robert; and grandson, Jason Van Dam.

Funeral ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 SW Buchanan, Topeka, where the family will greet guests one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Colony Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Women’s Ministry at First Church of the Nazarene.
