James M. Shields, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

He was born November 22, 1936 near Havensville, Kansas, to the late Ed and Anna (Gunther) Shields. James was raised in the Coal Creek Community, north of Onaga. He graduated from Corning High School and was a long-time member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. James proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955 - 1958. He was employed by the City of Topeka at the Topeka Public Golf Course from 1960 – 1995. He served the last 15 years as Golf Course Superintendent there and was named Golf Course Superintendent Emeritus at the time of his retirement by then-Mayor Harry “Butch” Felker.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy and brother, Laverne.

He is survived by his son, Paul (Angie) of Wichita; grandsons, Ryan and Brendan; sister, Barbara Flach of Paxico; brother, Edward Shields of Havensville; sister, Marilyn McMillin of Leawood; and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a parish rosary will be prayed at 10:15 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3601 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
