Burt Alan Unger, 67, Topeka, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Hillsdale Place in Topeka.

Burt was born July 25, 1948 in Kansas City, KS, the son of William and Virginia (Campbell) Unger. He graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, MO in 1966 and received his Associate Degree in Drafting from Kansas City Business College.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years, including a tour in Vietnam and 3 additional years in the Navy Reserves.

He was employed by the State of Kansas as a draftsman in Topeka for 13 years and later for Dillon’s Grocery Stores.

He was a collector of coins, watches, baseball cards; enjoyed fishing and hunting; and carved and painted duck decoys.

He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America; Lifetime member of the N.R.A.; and formerly a member of the Arab Shrine.

Burt married Patty Griffiths on October 5, 1980 in Centralia, KS. She preceded him in death on May 10, 2013. Survivors include his mother, Virginia Unger of Kansas City, KS; sisters, Beth (Jim) Brown, Concord Township, OH, Debbie (Michael) Wardrop, Port Ludlow, WA; brothers, Steve (Lori) Unger, St. Peters, MO, and John (Marilyn) Unger, Kansas City, MO; and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his father, William A. Unger and his brother, Daniel A. Unger.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Centralia Cemetery in Centralia, KS. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
