Benjamin Ryan “Ben” Hlasney 34, Topeka, died on Sunday, July 5, 2015, unexpectedly at home.

Ben was born February 26, 1981, in Chanute, KS, to Paul Hlasney and Rachel “Rae” Dunn-Hlasney. He graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 2000 and Pittsburg State University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and minor in history and government. For the past 6 years he worked for the Kansas Department of Corrections. At the time of his death he was a Corrections Counselor working with incarcerated mothers. Ben was planning on marrying Nicole “Nikki” Brandenburg in October. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with Nikki; dog, Goldie; and niece and nephew.

He is survived by his fiancée; mother, Rachel “Rae” Dunn (Ruth Larson), Rochester, MN; sister, Clarissa Hlasney (Robert Swift), Topeka, KS; nephew, Cody Swift; niece, Kylee Swift; and many friends and family.

Ben was preceded in death by his father, Paul Hlasney, Frontenac, KS; grandparents, Ed and Faye Hlasney, Leavenworth, KS, and Bud and Elaine Dunn, Emporia, KS.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2015, at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins, Topeka. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 16731 Springdale Road, Leavenworth. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka.
