John Louis “Jack” Hawn, 78, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

He was born January 4, 1937 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Albert Wesley and Martha Elizabeth (Hunter) Hawn. He was a 1955 graduate of Topeka High School and Washburn University receiving a BA in Accounting.

Jack was employed by Hawn Petroleum in McPherson, Kansas and later worked for KPERS retirement system for the State of Kansas, retiring after 28 years of service.

He was a member of Civitan Club of Topeka and American Legion Post No. 225 of Ozawkie, KS. He also served on the board for the Lake Ridge Home Association and Water Board.

Jack married Valetta “Val” Davis on October 1, 1961 in Hutchinson, Kansas. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Kathy L. (Tony Desch) Williams-Desch and Jonna L. (Todd) Desch; four grandchildren, Jaime (Brandon) Lair, Matthew (Amy Theel) Williams, Cody Desch and Alexis Desch; four great-grandchildren, Kaylyn and Hailee Lair and Abel and Barrett Williams, all of Topeka; and a sister, Frances Edwards, Danville, VA.

Jack enjoyed playing golf, KU Basketball, spending time with his grandchildren and the fur babies. In his younger years he coached grade school football and tee-ball.

Honoring his request, Jack was cremated. A celebration of life service will be 10 a.m., Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Private family inurnment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS 66604 or to American Legion Post No. 225 of Ozawkie, KS or charity of the donor’s choice.
