Carolyn “Kay” Verna

Carolyn “Kay” Verna, 74, Hoyt, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital. She was born on January 14, 1941, in Topeka, the daughter of Charles Franklin and Cecil Leona (Brown) Simons.

Kay worked for Bud’s Café in North Topeka, and several retail stores before retiring to housewife. She loved to watch basketball, football, and baseball games. Her favorite teams were K.U. and K.C. She loved fishing and was very active with softball, camping, and bowling where she went to several tournaments out of town until her health stopped her.

She loved going to the grandchildren’s games and loved all activities involving family.

Kay was married to Kenneth Trimble. They were later divorced. She later married William Verna who preceded her in death on August 28, 2014.

Surviving are her children: Lori Miller of Topeka, Kathy Bell (Bob) of Hoyt, Kevin Trimble of Topeka, Elizabeth McMurray (Aundra) of Topeka, and Chris Kirtley (Troy) of Virginia; step-children: Isabelle Hosey of Topeka, Katharina Constance of Virginia, and Jacky Verna of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children: Terri Smith and Cindy Finan.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Monday, March 9, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Avenue, Topeka.

Kay will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
