Melvin was born July 10, 1949 in Topeka, the son of H.H. and Dorothy (Longshore) Carothers. He went to Berryton Grade School and graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1967.
He worked in the trucking industry all of his life, most recently driving for Ruan.
He was a member of Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene and Masonic Lodge #248 A.F. & A.M.
Melvin married Earlene Helmke on February 14, 2008 in Wakarusa. She survives. Other survivors include brother, Don (Rita) Carothers, Berryton; step-daughter, Lisa (Bryan) Rogers, Lee’s Summit, MO; step-son, Ryan Helmke, Dallas, TX; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Ava, Megan, Lauren and Caitlyn Rogers; niece, Kathy Carothers; nephew, Harlan Carothers; and his faithful canine companions, Maggie and Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Henry Carothers.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road.
