Robert Eugene Johnson, 56, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at his home. He was born on January 17, 1951 in Topeka, the son of Eugene L. and Mary Rose Burtenshaw Johnson. Robert graduated from Shawnee Heights High School and Topeka Technical College. He worked for DuPont for 24 years as a machine operator; he and his wife owned and operated The Gem Store in Topeka. He studied gemology and rare colored gem stones and designed jewelry settings with the rare gems. Robert had a great passion for the sport of fishing and wood working. He married Susan Clara Stender on December 25, 2004 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include Patricia and Clifford Hanser of Topeka, Kristinia and Jeffery Hoyt of Branson, MO and Joseph and Molly Mead of Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, NV, Richard Buck of Hutchinson, aunts and uncles, Fran Noble, Betty Davis, Harriet Hovath, Mary and Jack Fleanor, Ruth Coffendaffer, Ray Burtenshaw, seven grandchildren and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald R. Johnson. Robert will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Hospice Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
