Allen was born July 21, 1927, in New Orleans, LA, to Chester Arthur and Virginia Marie (Disher) Sackett. He graduated from high school in New York City in 1945. Allen worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1986. He married Mary Calandro on October 28, 1946. Together they had two children. They were long time members of St. John’s Evangelical Church since 1951 and recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Colby, KS.
He is survived by his two children, Jayne (Darrell) Melstrom of Goodland, KS and Michael (Rhonda) Sackett of Kansas City; four grandchildren, Crystal (Mario) Hernandez, Dwight (Amber) Melstrom, Andrew Sackett, Jesse Sackett; four great-grandchildren, Miranda Hernandez, Erica Hernandez, Faith Melstrom and Bryan (Tiffany) Melstrom; and two great-great-grandchildren, Zowie and Xavier Melstrom.
Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sackett; parents; and grandson, Greg Melstrom.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore Street, Topeka, KS 66606. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund.
