Rita Kay Carter
1942 - 2018

Rita Kay Carter, 76, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 25th at Midland Hospice with her family by her side.

Rita was born March 7, 1942, to John Frederick and Lois Bernice (Somers) Schwinn in Longview, Washington. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1959 and from Washburn University in 1963. Rita was united in marriage to Richard H. Carter on June 9, 1963 in Ottawa, Kansas. She taught at Landon Junior High from 1963 to 1968. Later she taught at Jay Shideler Junior High and Washburn Rural Middle School. She loved teaching, but her passion was being with her family and supporting her kid’s and grandkid’s activities. She was an active member at Brookwood Covenant Church in Topeka, Kansas. Rita enjoyed and played almost any kind of sports, her teaching/church/moms friend groups, and hosting meals for friends and family in her home.

Rita is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard; their children: Richard, Jr., (Margaret) Carter, and Jill (Tony) Stewart; 4 grandchildren: Trip and Lincoln Carter, Grace Lindman, and Hayden Stewart; sisters Sandra Friend, Linda Stuart, and brother David Schwinn. Rita was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Asa Carter.

A special thank you to Wamego Swing Bed and Midland Hospice Team for their loving care, kindness, and support. Also, to her many friends and cousins who visited or sent cards during her brief illness.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, April 30, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 1, at Brookwood Covenant Church.
