Carroll Lyle Nelson died at his home Tuesday, April 17, 2018, from colon cancer. He was born (12-9-26) in the Washington County farm home of his parents David and Myrtle (Lovendahl) Nelson. He attended Graham School (a one room country school), Agenda High School, served in the Army Air Corps’ occupation of Japan, and graduated from Kansas State College in 1950 (B.S. in Agriculture Engineering). As a Civil Engineer he worked for Washington County, the Water Resources Division of the Kansas Board of Agriculture, and the engineering firms of Burgwin and Martin; Van Doren, Hazard, Stallings; and Bartlett and West. Among his favorite projects were designing a stretch of the Kansas Turnpike between Topeka and Lawrence; an Alaska earthquake damage survey of water and sewer systems; designing sections of Heartland Park; and an award winning design of Highway 24 between Wamego and Manhattan. He enjoyed spectator sports, was a Catbacker, a charter member of the 20-30 Club, a member of First Congregational Church, the VFW, and served for many years as secretary of the Topeka Engineers Club. He and his wife Ann (Kirk) recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She survives as do their sons Greg and John and their granddaughter Tigris Bergman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Adrian and his sister Leona Holmes. Special thanks are expressed to the Erin Team of Midland Care Hospice.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Mount Hope Cemetery. Kansas State University Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association and First Congregational Church are suggested sites for memorial contributions.
