In Memory Of
Pastor Frederick Shelton Hollomon
1925 - 2018
Fred was born May 25, 1925 in Dawson, Georgia, the son of Shelton and Mattie (Bigelow) Hollomon. His family moved to Alabama in 1938 where he graduated valedictorian from Dothan High School in 1942. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1949 with a B.S. in Business Administration. Fred was in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, and graduated from Aerial Navigation School in 1945.
Pastor Hollomon was called into the ministry, which led him to enroll in Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, where he received a Masters in Religious Education and Master of Divinity degree. He pastored a church in Oklahoma while in seminary, and served as pastor of his first full-time church in Carterville, MO.
Pastor Fred spent the remaining years of his ministry in Kansas, where he served churches in Baxter Springs, Manhattan, Lawrence, KC, and Topeka.
Fred retired in 2002 after serving 50 years in the pastorate. He served 15 years as pastor of the Highland Park Baptist Church in Topeka. Following his retirement, he served as Elder and Associate Pastor at New Beginning Baptist Church in Topeka.
His “Book of Uncommon Prayers”, published in 2005, is a collection of 100 of his favorite prayers written while serving as Chaplain of the Kansas State Senate for 31 years. He retired as the Senate Chaplain at the end of the 2012 session.
Pastor Fred and his wife Pat lived in Topeka from 1987 - 2015, and served on the Board of Directors for Christians for Life, Inc., which has facilitated the building of the The Heart of America Memorial for the Unborn in Topeka. They have lived in Lawrence since 2015.
Pastor Hollomon is survived by his wife, Pat, of 42 years, his brother, John (Shirley), niece, Julieann Hurst (Randy) and their son, Andrew, children (and spouses) Judy Hendrick (Tom), Cathy Naylor (Bill), Becky Morrison (Ken), Bill Hollomon (Michelle), Kristi Carter (Billy), Caylynn Singer, John Britt, Dona Howard, Suzanne Gaut (Justin), and his 19 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Pastor Hollomon’s life will be held at New Beginning Baptist Church, 1329 SW 37th, Topeka, on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at 10:30AM. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 9:30AM. Graveside service to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Topeka. (Across the street from Pastor Hollomon’s home of 15 years – where he insisted on being buried, so that his geographically challenged children wouldn’t have to learn directions to his final resting place, to eliminate all excuses to visit him there.) We ask that everyone come prepared to CELEBRATE this joyous occasion of Pastor Hollomon’s transition to his long-awaited (and MUCH deserved) mansion in heaven!
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Christians For Life, Inc., 1216 SE Republican St., Topeka, Kansas 66607. www.heartofamericawall.org.
