Harry Edward Shafer, 89, of Topeka, died Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Stormont-Vail Hospital. He was born August 6, 1928, in Topeka, the son of Harry Samuel and Wilma Evangeline (Prosser) Shafer.
At age 19, Harry “Sonny” started working at the Menninger Foundation and worked there for over 44 years. He was a member of the Jehovah Witness, Central Congregation.
Harry was married to Thelma Hankamer for 59 years.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Shafer, of the home; children: Kenneth Shafer (Dorothy) of Topeka, Mitzi Shafer of Olathe, KS, Monica Shafer of Topeka, and Manda Rice (Prentiss) of Topeka; three grandchildren: Sherres Taylor of Topeka, Mynika Washington of Dallas, TX, and Justin Shafer of Topeka; and six great-grandchildren: Ebony Woods, Trey Washington, Howard Taylor, Kylie Washington, Atticus Shafer, and Caden Buckner.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 am, Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Private interment of cremains will be in Rochester Cemetery, 1200 NW Menninger Road, Topeka.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, Tuesday, at the funeral chapel.
