John R. Adams, 95, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Brewster Place.

He was born on May 25, 1922 in Chillicothe, MO to Walter and Sula J. (Jennings) Adams.

He grew up in Topeka, KS and graduated from Topeka High School in 1939 and went on to attend Washington University and Columbia University in New York City, NY, where he obtained his degree in architecture in 1948. His education was interrupted by his service during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He served as a Quarter Master, Second Class with the United States Navy.

He worked as an architect for Ekdahl, Davis, DePew & Persson (now Tevis Architects) in Topeka from 1953 to 2013.

John was an avid traveler, making many trips to Europe with the Mulvane Art Museum and the student trips from the Washburn University Art Department. He made a life-long study of the French language, and belonged to the French Language Study Group in Topeka.

In the last years of his life, he appreciated the personal assistance of his caregivers with Comfort Keepers: Harriett, Lee, Alexis, Kaye, Tereneisha, Rahneisha, Judith, Jean, Rene, Bruce, Larissa, Jeanna, Anne, Ron, Monika and Tara.

He is survived by a niece, Diane Punto, and three great-nieces: Suzy Griffin, Nancy Berge, and Paula Kluth.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, William Adams and Ned Adams, and his longtime friend, Dorothy Diehl.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. Private burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Funeral Chapel & Reception Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University or to the Topeka Symphony Orchestra.
