Melvin was born September 10, 1922 in Reading, the son of Cason M. and Maude A. (Dodd) Cropp. He graduated from Reading High School.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
He was employed by Goodyear as a Maintenance Mechanic, retiring after 34 years of service
.
He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Topeka, and the Good Sam’s Camping Club.
Melvin married Marjorie Moore on February 8, 1941 in Lebo. She died February 5, 2010. Survivors include son, Russell (Kathy) Cropp; daughter, Mary Brown; grandchildren, Robin Brown (Rusty Spencer), Rhonda Burghart (John Burghart), Greg (Terri) Cropp, Doug (Amy) Cropp and Chad Cropp (Anne Geier); great-grandchildren, Jordan (Sadie) Maxwell, Eric Brown, Devin (Tanner) Barrand, Baylie Martin, Cason Cropp, Ian Cropp, Brianna Cropp, Lily Cropp, Jeremiah Cropp, Elyse (Jason) Baumann, Stephanie Taricco; great-great-grandchildren, Addy, Preston, and Haylen Baumann; sister-in-law, Evelyn Cropp; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bessie Grace Cropp, Maxine Mae (Lee) Weldon, Roy K. (Wilma) Cropp, Ray W. Cropp, John M. Cropp; and son-in-law, Dick Brown.
Mr. Cropp will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:0 0 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 210 NW Menninger Road. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Reading Cemetery in Reading.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church, Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manor, 4712 SW 6th, Topeka, KS 66606, or the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675.
