James Edward Hufford, 86, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017, less than three days after his beloved wife, Esther Lorraine (Wulfkuhle) Hufford.

James was born December 25, 1930, in Bolivar, MO, to Edward Aveington and Vica Marie (Gann) Hufford. He graduated from Springfield Senior High School in 1949. After graduation he joined the US Air Force, serving four years. James joined the Topeka Fire Department on April 1, 1955 and retired as a Battalion Chief on December 31, 1990. James and Esther were long-time members of South Knollwood Baptist Church. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and leather work. James and Esther enjoyed flea markets, southern gospel music, and spending time with their family and church friends.

He is survived by his three children, Pam North, Ron (Vicki) Hufford and Brenda (Charlie) Diegel; six grandchildren, Lacey Hufford, Nick (Becky) Diegel, Maggie North, Andy (Savannah) Diegel, Chris North, and Kodie Hufford; and three great-grandchildren, Naomi North, Ryker Hufford, and Evyn Diegel.

James was preceded in death by his wife; and sister, Isabel T. Martin.

A funeral service for both Esther and James will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at South Knollwood Baptist Church, 1813 SW 29th Street, Topeka, KS 66611. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka.
