Donna JoAnn (Porter) Hartzell, 84, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, August, 9, 2017, at Brookside Manor Nursing Facility, Overbrook.

Donna was born November 3, 1932, in York Township, Steuben County, IN, to Andrew Floyd and Luana (Blackman) Porter. She graduated from Metz High School in 1951. She married Rex Hartzell on June 19, 1960, in Metz, IN. Together they had three children. Donna was very involved in her children’s lives, volunteering as room mother at their schools and caring for her grandchildren when they were young. She taught Sunday School and was involved in Women’s Fellowship at First Congregational Church, where Rex and Donna are long-time members. One of the highlights of Donna’s travels was the trip she and Rex took to Japan. She enjoyed being outdoors and camping but above everything she loved her family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Rex Hartzell; three children, Allen (Catherine) Hartzell of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Hartzell, and Daniel (Andrea) Hartzell; four grandchildren, Grace, Emily, Caitlon, and Zachary Hartzell; and sister-in-law, Joanne Porter.

Donna was preceded in death by three brothers, Dean (Joan) Porter, Virgil Porter, and Sanford Porter.

A funeral ceremony will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins, Topeka, KS. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church or the Alzheimer’s Association, 3625 SW 29th Street, Suite 102, Topeka, KS 66614.
