Dorothy W. Holmes, 83, Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017 at a local hospital.

Dorothy was born October 31, 1933 in Topeka, the daughter of Albert and Florence (Niver) Mickens

She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1951.

She was employed as a Secretary at Blue Cross & Blue Shield for 35 years, retiring in 1986.

She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles, playing cards and loved to read.

Dorothy married Lyman E. Holmes on September 2, 1951 in Topeka. He died April 27, 1997. Survivors include grandson, Todd (Tammy) Holmes, Silver Lake; great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Karley, Garret; and daughter-in-law, Janet Carrell. She was also preceded in death by a son, Rick Holmes; grandson, Travis Holmes; and brother, Glenn Mickens.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home. Committal services will take place at noon at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
