Jeremy L. Gum, 44, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 23rd in his sleep at home after a long battle with complications with MS and COPD.

He was born on October 28, 1972, in Topeka, Kansas. He was the son of Ron and Denise (Martin) Gum, of Topeka, the brother of Jennifer Gum-Fowler (Chad Fowler), of Kincaid, Ks, and the uncle of Ariel Gum, Joshua Fowler and Derrick Fowler.

While attending Topeka High School he traveled twice to the Ukraine and Russia, resulting in worldwide friends. He also became an Eagle Scout during that time, graduating with the class of 1991.

During his varied work career of customer service, shift supervisor and leadership/trainer of co-workers, his passion was always for his creative endeavors. Jeremy became a Game Master for a tabletop action game at the age of 14. After 30 years, he was still running the longest weekly game in Topeka history. He was a teacher, mentor, reenactor, a creative story teller and artist. Jeremy became an accomplished poet, author and history researcher.

Jeremy created the Society of The Sword in 2004. The Society is made up of 9 committed gaming friends for the encouragement of each other as friends and artists. Jeremy gave each member a personally chosen sword to slay the Dragons in our lives. Although they are now living and working all over the U.S.A., they still stay in touch and often game together online. His life was short but was rich in what really matters; love, family and good, close friends.

He is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends to remember his wit and love. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Marion Gum and James Martin; Grandmother, Patsy Martin, and his fiancé, Rachael Chan, who passed away in 1992.

Jeremy will lie in state from 3:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. on Friday, May 26th, 2017 at Penwell-Gable Mid-Town Chapel. The family will greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Penwell-Gable Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to SCMS Health Access, a national organization that assists uninsured individuals with healthcare. Contributions may be made online at http://www.scmsha.org/ or in care of the funeral home.
