Justin Ace “Gus” Chilcott

Justin Ace “Gus” Chilcott, 89, Big Springs, KS, died Monday, April 24, 2017, at Plaza West. He was born January 14, 1928, at Blaine, the son of Frank Richard Chilcott, Sr. and Scottie Mae (Woosley) Chilcott. He had lived at Wamego before moving to Topeka in 1936.

Gus served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1948. Gus and his wife had owned Ruth & Gus Home Café from 1955 to 1963. He worked at Kansas Sand and Concrete from 1963 to 1987. His hobbies were camping, hunting, fishing, and collecting watch fobs. He spent his springs and summers at Melvern Lake.

He was married to Ruth Pearl Patterson on November 27, 1954, at Olathe. She preceded him in death on April 29, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Frank Chilcott, Jr.; two sisters: Alma Cordoba and Minnie Roane; and a son, Richard Werts, Sr., on January 26, 2016.

Surviving are four children: Linda Poort of Topeka, Cheryl Busey (Al) of Topeka, Linda Kay Hunter (Ralph) of Kennett Square, PA, and Alice Bates of Edmond, OK; 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Monday, May 1, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment will be in East View Cemetery, Big Springs.

Gus will lie in state after 1:00 PM, Sunday, at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice or the Big Springs United Methodist Church, 96 Highway 40, Lecompton, KS 66050.
