Hildegard “Hilde” Trout, age 91, passed away on April 14th, 2017 with members of her family and her beloved dogs at her side, at the residence she shared with her daughter and son-in-law in Topeka, KS. She died of natural causes as a result of failing health.
Hilde began life as the daughter of Joseph and Stella Zunterstein on the 9th of July 1925 in Vienna, Austria. There during her childhood she participated and nearly made the Austrian Junior National Swim team but that career was cut short with the arrival of Nazi occupation forces. She lived in the shadow of the Vienna Woods and Opera until her immediate family left Austria in 1938 to start a new life in Shanghai, China. It is there years later that Hilde met her future husband Richard S. Trout who was serving in the United States Army during the end of World War II. They married on August 6th 1945 in Shanghai and shortly after made their home near Douglas, WY.
The longest part of her life was spent living in Casper, WY. In Wyoming she had her first child; a daughter Phyllis E. Lansford (Gordon II) followed by sons Richard S. Trout, Jr. (Tanna) and Robert D. Trout (Linda). During the course of her life she made many friends who admired her strength, courage and love of life. Her kindness and caring endeared her to many. Her thoughtfulness and gift giving was abundant and from her heart. She was part of the volunteer mothers care team in the mid 1950's under the guidance of Dr. Brendan Phibbs, Chairman of the Natrona County Medical Society's rheumatic heart disease control committee that became a national model for helping to conquer Strep throat and Rheumatic fever. To those who held her dear to their hearts may she be remembered when you gaze upon natures flowers which were such a part of her life.
Hilde was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, her parents, and her brother Alfred Zunterstein. She is survived by her sister-in-law Eva Zunterstein, three children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous wonderful nieces and nephews.
In 2010 after the death of her husband she left Casper to live with her daughter Phyllis in Topeka, Kansas. These years became some of the most enjoyable of her life. It is there in Topeka with the love and caring of her daughter and family, her life’s journey came to an end. The family wishes to thank all those who played such an important part of her life especially in the last year. A very special thank you to Peggy, Glenna and Lois her care team in Topeka.
A funeral service and a celebration of Hilde’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21st, 2017 at Temple Beth Shalom, 4200 SW Munson Ave., Topeka. The service will be officiated by Rabbi Debbie Stiel.
Following the services in Topeka, Hilde will be laid to rest with her husband in the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery in Casper, WY. A celebration of Hilde’s life will be held at a later date in Casper.
