Ricky Lee Willoughby, 51, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017, following a courageous journey with cancer that lasted for 11 years.

He was born May 11, 1965, in Kansas City, MO to James and Elsie (Curtis) Willoughby.

He graduated from Holton High School in 1983. Following his education, he worked in telecommunications for the State of Kansas.

Rick married Wendy Renee (Cregut) Willoughby on December 17, 1994 in Topeka, KS.

He was honored to participate in many cancer awareness events including several 5k’s. Throughout his journey with cancer, Rick remained positive, and continued to be an inspiration to others. He was a continuous source of encouragement for so many people.

Rick enjoyed being outdoors, running, playing and watching sports, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy Willoughby, of Topeka; a son, Ryan Willoughby, of Topeka; a sister, Carol (Darrell) Winkler, of Columbia, MO; brothers, Ron (Nan) Willoughby, of Raleigh, NC, and David Willoughby, of Holton, KS; nieces, Kelly (Jake) Schindler, and Anna Sage; nephews, Shannon (Amanda) Winkler, Matt (Jamie) Willoughby; parents-in-law, David and Mary Jane Cregut; sister-in-law, Cherie (Alex) Sage; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar, Topeka, KS. The family will greet friends beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions in Rick’s honor may be made to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Court, Topeka, KS, 66606 or to the Ryan Willoughby Education Fund, at any Fidelity State Bank location.

Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
