Byron William McElhenny, 65, of Pittsburg, passed away on January 27, 2017, following a struggle with cancer.

Byron William McElhenny was born October 3, 1951 in Topeka, KS to William B. and Marjorie (Alexander) McElhenny. His father preceded him in death on September 1, 1976, and his mother preceded him in death on October 6, 2015.

At the time of his death, Byron lived in New Hope Group Home in Pittsburg, KS. He enjoyed spending time with the many wonderful employees who cared for him.

Byron was the sweetest, kindest man you could ever hope to meet. Furthermore, if you met him, he would ALWAYS (seriously, always) remember your name. He loved Christmas carols at any time of the year, as well as many other songs. He also loved the Kansas City Royals and KU Jayhawks, and his room was decorated in crimson & blue. He participated in the Special Olympics Track & Field, Basketball, and Bowling, which inspired his sister Ann to volunteer annually for the Special Olympics John L. Cassidy Heartland Winter Games. Byron nearly always had a smile on his face, and it was hard not to smile with him. He made the world a better place.

Byron is survived by his sisters, Ann McElhenny and Sara McElhenny of Overland Park, Kansas, and by several cousins.

Byron joins family members who died before him, his parents; grandparents; aunts; uncles; and a cousin, Ward Whelan.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Mt. Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral chapel.

A memorial service celebrating Byron’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at New Hope, 2614 N. Joplin, Pittsburg, KS 66762.

Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Special Olympics – New Hope, 2614 N. Joplin, Pittsburg, KS 66762.
