August “Gus” Stremel, 95, Topeka, passed away on January 12, 2017.

Gus was born on January 17, 1921 in Loretto, KS to Leo and Anna (Brungardt) Stremel. He attended Lane County Schools.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, surviving Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was a paratrooper and artillery chief of section. Following the war, he married Bertha Lee Schanfelt, on April 21, 1947. He was a farmer and rancher in Lane County until his retirement in 1976, when they moved to Hutchinson, KS. They later lived in Manhattan, KS. Following Bertha’s death, he spent his winter months in Pharr, TX.

He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka.

He is survived by a daughter, Beth Denney of Topeka; sons Steve (Jan) Stremel of Farmers Branch, TX, and Ed (Chris) Stremel of Lantana, TX; grandchildren, Jason Denney, Megan (Daniel) Ackerman, Kyle Stremel, Stefanie (Adam) Davis, and Ryan Stremel; and great grandchildren, Alex and Emma Ackerman, and Alexa and Sydney Davis.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Barbara; and seven siblings.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Sunrise Cemetery, 2901 Stagg Hill Road in Manhattan, KS.

Memorial contributions in Gus’s honor may be made to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, 9720 W. 87th Street, Overland Park, KS 66212.
