George was born November 12, 1934, in Topeka, KS, to John Raymond and Estel May (Rinehart) Smith. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1952. After high school he proudly served four years in the Air Force. After his military service he married E. Lois Miller on September 7, 1958 in Topeka, KS. Together they had three children, Debbie Greeson, Jenny Smith-Johnson (Scott) and Charles R. Smith. George started his career as an insurance agent with American National Life Insurance and went on to become an independent insurance agent representing multiple insurance companies. He was a member of the Golden Rule Lodge #90, AF & AM, Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies, Topeka York Rite Bodies, Arab Shriners, Helena Chapter #210, O. E. S. (Past Patron). George received the Grand Cross of Colors from the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. In his free time, George enjoyed gardening, softball, karaoke and was an avid golfer. His greatest passions in life were simple, the love of his family and the many enjoyable times he spent with them.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years; three children; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Geraldine Pruitt of Alachua, FL, Helen Turner and Dean Smith.
George was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Don Smith and John Smith, Jr.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, Topeka, KS 66604. Burial will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
