John McMillen Cokeley, 86, of Topeka, died at Stormont Vail Health Center on September 15, 2016 of complications following a pulmonary embolus.

He was born on September 6,1930 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the son of Harlin and Clara McMillen Cokeley. He was a graduate of Morgantown High School, West Virginia University, and the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

He served as a Flight Surgeon in the Navy, and later in the Naval Reserves.

He was a staff Psychiatrist at the Menninger Foundation and, later, the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center from which he retired.

He married Janice Marie Doubles on August 21, 1954 in Morgantown, West Virginia. She preceded him in death on July 11, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edmond Cokeley and Ralph Cokeley. He is survived by his children; Laurie Cokeley of Topeka, Will (Lynda) Cokeley of Delia, Kansas, and Sharon (Greg) Yakshaw of Lenexa, Kansas; grandchildren; Holly Cokeley of Somerville, Tennessee and Ryan Cokeley of Topeka; and step-granddaughter Heather Carter (Ryan) Jones of Olathe, Kansas.

He was a lifelong hunter and avid sports fan, particularly Kansas State and West Virginia Football. His other passion was spending time at his son's hunting preserve, Cokeley Farms, in Delia.

Cremation is planned and a Memorial service will be held at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road on September 20, 2016 at 7:00 PM. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM prior to the service. Private inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society or Saving Death Row Dogs.
