Irma Marie Straub
1938 - 2016

Irma Marie Straub, 77, of Topeka, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, July 17, 2016.

Born Irma Marie Fields on October 3, 1938, to Andrew Jackson Fields and Hilda Anna Minna Meyer Fields Vonlehe; Irma spent her childhood growing up in Kansas City, MO with her siblings, Ruth Schutte, Nita Runge, Andy Fields, and Eunice Beier. Always an avid learner, she graduated from high school at the age of 16 and attended Concordia University in Seward, NE where she studied education. It was there she met Eugene “Gene” Straub. They were married on June 7, 1959, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kansas City.

Their first adventure in life was accepting a call to First Lutheran School in Ponca City, OK, where Irma taught 2nd grade. The family grew with the arrivals of Anna Marie StraubMeier, Rose Marie Linhardt (Sam), Jean Marie Harper, and Dean Eugene Straub. The family moved to North Hollywood, CA in 1969 before accepting a call to teach at Topeka Lutheran School in Topeka, KS in 1971. A woman of numerous talents, Irma served as an interpreter for the deaf at both French Middle School and Topeka West, taught at TARC, owned and operated the snack bar in the Medical Arts Building, and dabbled in beekeeping, before retiring from teaching at Capper's. In retirement, she continued to pursue her passions auditing classes at Washburn University, reading, traveling the world with her husband, planting flowers on her beloved farm north of town, and spending time with her 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church in Topeka, Irma’s life was lived in service to the Lord. She loved unconditionally, without judgement or limit. Even in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, she could recite her favorite Bible passages as comfort to herself and others.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Faith Lutheran Church, 1716 SW Gage Blvd. Topeka, KS 66604.

Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Lutheran School, 701 SW Roosevelt Street, Topeka, KS 66606 or Easter Seals Capper Foundation, 3500 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.
